Olin Chemical provided Meigs South’s fifth grade with the opportunity to experience some local history.  On December 16th, we took a trip to Cherokee Memorial Removal Museum and Wilderness Refuge.  Students got the chance to interact with and view items created by the Cherokee Indians.  Some examples were clothing, jewelry, tools, weapons, and musical instruments.  They also go to participate in an authentic Indian rain dance.  Another exciting moment occurred when the students got to walk up to the Hiwassee Observation Deck.  The view of the mountains and river was spectacular.

After lunch, students were bused to the Wildlife Refuge to view the whooping cranes.  They got the chance to look through telescopes to view several varieties of cranes.  They also got to meet with expert scientists concerning the migration of cranes through the Meigs County area.  Overall the trip was a success, being both exciting and educational.  We would like to thank all of the agencies that provided us with this wonderful opportunity again.

The annual 5th grade musical will be held in May.  The performance consists of all 5th grade students performing song and dance routines about the Western Frontier.  Please contact Mrs. Debbie Gay if you need more information or would like to help.
