Source of Progress:Source of Challenge:
Students in Math classes have 2 class Periods with a different teacher. This provides students with different teaching methods. These teachers have been to several workshops that show best teaching methods for differentiated learners. Both the Social Studies and the Math teachers use peer tutoring on a regular basis. The 6th grade Social Studies teacher has developed different learning styles, activities, and hands on material to teach the objectives. There are 3 RLA classes every day- writing, reading and English. There are 3 different teachers for RLA who work together to cover all the RLA objectives. They meet often during the 9-week period to collaborate on teaching the skills. The 6th grade teachers work together to review the RLA skills with the students using a buzzer game to encourage participation and learning. The 6th grade science teacher uses hands on materials to teach the science objectives. Students with disabilities were helped with a Math/RLA coach, a Special Education teacher and a teacher’s aide in most of their classes. Math students in 7th and 8th have 2 class periods for math. The same teacher works with both classes thus limiting the different teacher methods of learning. Teachers still rely heavily on worksheets and textbooks. Some of these teachers have not been to workshops to encourage using different methods to work with the students. Objectives and skills have increased in difficulty in math and RLA and this is an additional disadvantage to our economically disadvantaged students. These students need more “real world” application to understand this new level of skills.
