Are you aware that children leave Meigs South Elementary School on Friday afternoon and many have little to no food until they return on Monday morning for breakfast? If you are not, you are only a few of many others that have no idea we have hungry children in our county. Last year, thanks to the Chattanooga Food Bank off Amicola Hwy., this is no longer happening. For the past two years, the food bank has delivered bags of non-perishable foods to the school for these less fortunate children. They make a trip from Chattanooga to Meigs South twice each month to deliver these bags. This year 73 bags are given each Friday to students to take home for the weekend.
At the beginning of the school year in August each year, Meigs South teachers are asked to designate students in their classrooms who might have this need. A letter is sent home by each of these children to their parents concerning their situation. The parents may deny any assistance or acknowledge the need, as well as, list other preschool children in the home. After the letters are returned to the school, the Chattanooga Food Bank is notified.
Last year Meigs South's nurse, Missy Bassham decided it was time to help replenish the food bank for what they had done to help these children. She organized the first food drive at the school and delivered approximately 800 pounds of food to the Cleveland location of the WRCB-TV Channel 3 "Share Your Christmas" in coordination with the Chattanooga Food Bank. This year she has scheduled the drive to begin 11/21 through 12/9. If you would like to help in this endeavor, please bring your non-perishable food items to the school and place them in the box in the office. You may also make a financial contribution and can give this directly to Missy. Mrs. Missy will deliver the items to the Cleveland location as soon as school dismisses on December 9th.
Your help is greatly appreciated and we thank you, in advance, for considering this worthwhile charity.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas. Again, thank you for "Sharing Your Christmas".
